Bristol, all you need is love… or FOOD!
Bristol is undoubtedly a city of culture with a theatre or music venue in almost every district.
From the traditional, red velvet clad Hippodrome, to the Kelvin Players Theatre, a converted church on Gloucester Road and the impressive St Georges’, there is a venue for everyone! But before you spend an afternoon or evening enjoying some top notch entertainment you really need to enjoy some delicious grub!
We’ve picked some of our favourite venues and some nearby Eat Early partners so you can really make a night of it at.
The Old Vic and Buttermilk & Maple
The Old Vic on King Street is an absolute Bristol institution and has recently enjoyed an incredible refurb making it one of the most beautiful spaces in Bristol. They have a fantastic food offering inside but for those that want to avoid the pre theatre crowds, we suggest a visit to Buttermilk & Maple, a mere 3 minutes away. Here you will find beautiful views across the river as well as sumptuous surroundings inside. Their menu full of tempting treats such as fried chicken, lobster mac and cheese and plenty of “light and quick bite” options. If you’re really looking to celebrate make sure you check out the drinks choices, they have one of the hottest cocktail menus in the city.
Colston Hall and Zero Degrees
Colston Hall is undergoing a bit of a refurb (well, a massive one in all honesty) but they are still holding some fine events within the foyers. If you’ve got tickets to see a band, attend a wine tasting or one of the family events over the summer you are going to want something to eat before or after! Just up the hill is the fantastic Zero Degrees that not only serve incredible, fresh pizzas and on-site brewed craft beer, they also have some of the finest views across the city too! If you don’t fancy pizza they have buckets of mussel, towering bowls of pasta and a selection of lighter bites to keep you going all night long.
The Hippodrome and Harbour & Browns
The Hippodrome is about as traditional as you can get in Bristol, standing for over 100 years, it’s our very own taste of West End theatre. As you can imagine with such popular shows such as Legally Blonde, Kinky Boots and Matilda playing, all the nearby restaurants get full up pretty quickly. A short walk over the bridge to the much lauded Wapping Wharf will bring you to Harbour & Browns, one of the best places to enjoy sharing plates and a glass of bubbly in the city. Service is quick and friendly, the food is fresh and vibrant and the bubbles are free flowing. We adore the truffled mushroom arancini and their prawns on focaccia, everyone needs a little decadence before a show, darling.
Kelvin Players and Pizzarova
Some of us would rather some am-dram and support their local community theatre and the Kelvin Players tick all of those boxes. As on of the most respected non-professional theatres in the South West and over 90 years of productions, they have shown everything from The Vagina Monologues, A Christmas Carol and and adapted version of James and the Giant Peach. As a community venture, they encourage anyone to come and join in to see things from the other side of the curtain so whether you’re watching or performing, you want something quick and tasty to eat pre-show. Pizzarova is a little more than 60 seconds up the road and the service is speedy for those pushed for time, the pizzas are light, generously topped and slightly charred for that incredible taste we all associate with Pizzarova. We highly recommend grabbing a few dips for those tasty crusts too!
Redgrave Theatre and Fujiyama
Hidden away in Clifton is the Redgrave Theatre. Attached to Clifton College this theatre enjoys productions of music, comedy and drama including a rendition of High School Musical, The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe and their fair share of tribute bands to entertain and enchant. 10 minutes walk away is the popular Fujiyama serving traditional sushi as well as teppanyaki and udon noodle dishes. Choose to pop in for a quick bite before a show or get in early for a more leisurely sharing platter with your friends for a fresh take on pre-show dining!
